A335/SA335 P9 is a seamless ferritic alloy-steel pipe used for high-temperature applications. These pipes are versatile and can be used to transmit water, oil and natural gas.

Key to the composition of chrome moly alloy P9 is the addition of chromium and molybdenum. Chromium, or chrome, improves high-temperature strength, increases oxidation resistance and raises the tensile, yield and hardness at room temperatures. Molybdenum increases the strength, elastic limit, resistance to wear, impact qualities and hardenability. It increases the resistance to softening, restrains grain growth and makes chromium steel less susceptible to embrittlement. Moly is also the most effective additive for increasing high temperature creep strength, or creep resistance. It also enhances the corrosion resistance of steel and inhibits pitting.
 

P9 Pipe Applications

Due to the ferrimagnetic characteristics of iron, a few steel alloys in A335 P9 pipes can be used in applications where their reactions to magnetism are important. This includes transformers and electric motors. P9 is also a popular grade for many different applications such as:

Inspection & Test

Hydrostatic test shall be performed on each pipe length of ASTM A335 P9 along with dimensional inspection and visual examination. Longitudinal or transverse tension test, flattening test, or bend test shall be performed for each heat number of furnace. When specified by the purchaser, one of the alternative nondestructive tests can be performed: ultrasonic test, eddy current test, or flux leakage examination. Hardness test is not necessary.

ASTM A-335M Grade P9 tube Packaging & Shipping

ASTM A335 P9 Steel Pipes may be furnished bare or coated and with capped ends. Tubes and pipes up to 3" OD will be supplied in bundles. In order to prevent rust during sea shipment, bundles of ASTM A335 P9 tubes may be wrapped with polypropylene sheets, and secured with flat steel bands. Over 3" OD will be supplied loose.
